Representation Matters

As a trans person, it's been a rough year with a lot of terrible anti-trans legislation popping up all over the country. I was even asked to be on a zoom panel on Trans Day of Visibility and when we were discussing the cultural movement from attacking gay people and gay marriage to now attacking trans people I spoke up and said that is why I believe so strongly in the power of representation and the power of story.

Today I discovered a tweet by an Indian jewelry company that created a commercial telling a trans story with the main character played by a trans woman (already they get points for doing that!).

Now, personally, when corporations celebrate "pride" it's often empty to me because just manufacturing products with rainbows does not make the lives of gay people better politically etc (put your money where your rainbows are). However, as I said, representation is HUGE and that is ultimately how the culture changes, when people see that trans people are here, we've been here, we're not weird, we're not scary, we're just: people.
